Meet Stuart Black
We interview Stuart Black who has been with us since 2010. He started his career in the well intervention industry through our Multi Service Trainee Programme. Stuart shares his story of how he has reached his current position and what it involves.
Firstly, what is your job and what does it involve on a daily basis?
I’m currently a wireline supervisor in Aberdeen which involves a variety of daily tasks depending on the current well programme. One of my main responsibilities is ensuring that daily operations are completed according to the programme and that they follow Altus Intervention procedures. Another part of my job is reporting daily operations to our onshore team. Following this I make sure that all equipment, tools, personnel and procedures for upcoming works are in place and notify onshore of any short falls so that they can be remedied as soon as possible. As part of the team, I assist and mentor fellow crew members when required.
Why did you decide to join Altus Intervention in the first place?
Back in 2010 I decided that I wanted to work offshore. My brother had previously worked at Qserv (now Altus Intervention) during the holidays when he was at university and he recommended it as a great place to work. He told me that there were good career progression opportunities with in depth in house training. So I sent my CV in and succeeded in getting an interview for the MST Programme (now Well Services Trainee Programme).
How have you been able to progress your career at Altus Intervention?
At the time I started I didn’t know much at all about well intervention or offshore in general. Straight away we did introductory course to oilfield which gave me an in depth understanding of the industry.
During each section of the course I developed a good basic understanding of the company’s departments. On the practical side of the course, the hands on training and guidance from the experienced instructors played a big part in increasing my confidence.
